Bastien Soleil - Uncompromising Artistic Vision
Uncompromising is the mindset behind Bastien Soleil’s entire body of work - a creative philosophy shaped by water, light, the human body, and the search for inner truth.
Across photography, film, exhibitions, and artistic collaborations, this vision reflects a radical commitment to authenticity, presence, and emotional intensity.
A creative philosophy shaped by water, light, silence, and inner truth
Soleil acts as a mediator of our times. The artist contrasts silence against the backdrop of turmoil.
Beyond the photographic capturing of idealised bodies, the narrative of each tableau seeks to embrace invisible forces and a deep-seated, hidden facet of human nature. The artist questions the universe and the 'mirror symptoms' that we all feel viscerally; our eye captures and contemplates, and our gaze can brush against our soul.
Soleil meets us at the threshold between spirit and matter. He brings water and light together and reveals to us the dialogue between the visible world and our inner world where our soul resides. His work prises open the door that separates reality from feeling.
A dual dance of the invisible unfolds: the perpetual movement of water with the subtly 'finite' and refined expressions of the models.
In each image, the philosopher recalls water's power of revelation; its capacity to dissolve time; and its wealth of symbols and expressions. In this journey of initiation, Soleil feels this fusion with the elements. The work is within the lens' reach, raw and visceral, and imposes itself in this moment, as if emerging from nothingness.
Here, Soleil senses that the interplay of water and light speaks to him of the Origin, and 'nature has come full circle'. The work appears stripped down yet imbued with power.
The Caravaggio-inspired chiaroscuro is a source of expression for Soleil. His radiant painting-sculpture transports us to yet another level of consciousness. It lends the bodies a monumental presence, and the bridging gestures offer an aura of eternity.
To blend the human nude with the interplay of shadows and bring forth renewed forms of the nude: this is the intention. The eye is drawn to the grace and the nudity. It is the naked gaze that is invited, the one that sees beyond what is shown.
Soleil tells us this: there is no AI, no post-production and no screen, and therefore no barrier between life laid bare and the nakedness of the soul.
